De Rust is a small Victorian town at the gateway to the Klein Karoo located at the foot of the Swartberg Mountain range between Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West. De Rust is conveniently positioned at the southern entrance of Meiringspoort a manificent gorge through the Swartberg Mountain range and just a few kilometers from Oudtshoorn.
De Rust was established in 1900 on a portion of Meirings Farm. Petrus Johannes Meiring extensively explored the swartberg mountain range and discovered the route through it, following the karoo’s great River (Groot Rivier) which flows through the gorge. The name of this town literally means The Rest and is an indication of how it came about.
