Kloofing is moving down a kloof (canyon) using a variety of outdoor activities such as walking, climbing, jumping, abseiling, swimming and bouldering.
Although hiking down a kloof can also be classified as kloofing it is normal for kloofing to be more technical and adventurous. Kloofing also requires navigational, route-finding and other outdoor skills.
A wide variety of kloofing routes are found in South Africa and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Herewith a list of adventure operators in South Africa that offer kloofing.
Kloofing is also know as canyoning or canyoneering.
Eden Adventures – Kloofing – Garden Route
Their half day kloofing trip is ideal for both beginners and experienced kloofers.
They start with a 30 minute walk through the forest down to the river. This is followed by a rock-hopping hike downstream, interspersed every now and again with a dip in the refreshing rockpools (wetsuits and buoyancy aids are provided). Although the swims are not always avoidable, all the jumps are. For those who dare, the jumps range from 2m to 12m. The main canyon is a stunning location with indigenous forest clinging to the cliffs that are towering over ones head.
