The Big Hole

The Big Hole is the largest hand dug excavation in the world. 150 years ago the site was a flat-topped hill then the word spread that diamonds have been discovered at the site.

The mine site started operating in1871 and stopped operating in1914. In this period 2,722 kilograms of diamonds have been extracted from 22,5 million tons of excavated earth.

The Big hole has its own visitor center where it tells the multi-faceted story of diamonds, this include the people that sought them,the tools they used and the wealth they generated.

The guests will also have the opportunity to go on a tour with the Site Guide.
